Fond Farewells
March 2006

Here are a few signs of our times and the disruptive force of technology:

  • The Rocky Mountain News has eliminated all of its financial listings, except for one page of statistics, from its print edition. Readers must now go online for their stock quotes, but they’ve been migrating there, anyway. With the newspaper industry trying to manage costs in the face of declining circulation and advertising revenues, it’s only a matter of time before other newspapers follow suit.

  • Konica Minolta, one of the best-known photography companies, is exiting the camera and film businesses, to focus on more promising products, such as color copiers for offices, liquid-crystal display materials, medical equipment, and optical devices.

  • Western Union sent its last telegram on January 27th after 150 years of being synonymous with that form of communication. Far from dead, Western Union transformed itself into a leader in the burgeoning money-transfer business over many years. Money transfer revenues surpassed telegram revenues in 1980 and now amount to nearly $5 billion annually.
